My three messages on diabetes

Participants of the Italian Youth Panel was asked to choose and select three personal messages about diabetes: their thoughts on the priorities that you want to communicate to the public, and the points on which we must act soon.

I thought about it a bit '. These are my three key messages about diabetes, and their explanations:

  • Diabetes: The sport is therapy. Like food and insulin a little 'sports should never miss: physical activity is a therapy for diabetes, even if done "in small doses." Do some exercise is essential for anyone to prevent, cure and improving diabetes. Even the sporting performance at a competitive level are accessible, and indeed represent a "gym" where to learn to manage their diabetes.
  • Diabetes 250 million times. With diabetes are not alone: we are many in the world, more and more. Especially in poor countries the situation is tragic, we also think of them. By joining forces we can help many people with diabetes. Something must be done to address this pandemic. Because today no longer have to die for diabetes, all are entitled to the insulin treatment indispensable.
  • People with diabetes: Do not call us sick. Who has diabetes is not an invalid, has no limits to achieve their goals and dreams, indeed, often has an edge with a force that pushes for better face the challenges of life. So do not call "sick" or "diabetic", but give us the dignity of people with diabetes: send this message to all the positive and put into play to our potential.

Love & Bike Tour: The arrival in Rome and initiatives Changing Diabetes

The final page of the diary of the tour party arrived in Rome from Perugia and ...

Rome, 08/09/2008

Finally the big moment has arrived: in the morning, our group has come to ride the streets of the historic center of Rome! The emotion and the atmospheres are obviously very large, despite the chaotic traffic of the city that required considerable attention from us. The good photographers Mario, Alberto and Nicola have the last shots, until we arrived at the finish: the Changing Diabetes Bus Village, set up near the Imperial Forum!

The artistic and historical framework of the event is simply fantastic. A large blue circle (symbol of diabetes) serves as the door to visitors, who come into a space entirely dedicated to diabetes, to his knowledge, prevention and diagnosis. We, too, 8 cyclists with diabetes, we were greeted by the organizers of the initiative and we have been requested several interviews. The spirit of Love & Bike Tour has been particularly stressed by the tandem of David and Michela, but that came from Cecilia sitting on the crossbar of a bike with Simon. The strength of their ships is contained in the commitment of the greatest cyclists arrival there were Carmine, Godfrey, Maurizio, Mauro and Henry. For applaudirci could not miss Monica and Sara, who provided us with machines and sympathy throughout the journey.

At the center of the village set up by Novo Nordisk, the Changing Diabetes Bus has hosted a press conference where the important event was presented to the major Italian media. Among the various personalities have also talked about some of us cyclists: David and Michela have exposed about physical activity and diabetes living in pairs, while Simon has brought his own positive experience and that of the youth panel. Around the modern bus, arrived in Italy after having toured the world, were assembled a number of tents in which were really important such as UNICEF, but also where to make the spaces provided through a free screening of diabetes and the state metabolic, and in specific areas you can get simple tips on prevention. Everything was officially inaugurated in the presence of the mayor of Rome, authorities and important personalities from business and professional.

In the afternoon some of us have also participated in the Media Roundtable at the auditorium of the Ara Pacis, which were presented to journalists and experts from around the world the results of the important international DAWN Youth Study, a project that highlights the avveriti needs and the needs of people with diabetes. Just here there was a further opportunity to share their enthusiasm with important personalities of our experience.

Now it's time to say goodbye. Each took his way home, carrying within himself something more. The Delegation of Diabetes & Cycling team has done a great job, sending positive messages to other important people: this is the purpose of our group, since its inception wanted years ago with Prof. Pierpaolo De Feo. We must thank Novo Nordisk, which has played a key role in helping and supporting the initiative, allowing all of this. And of course there is much gratitude to those whose passion and commitment have created and organized the tour. But above all, a very big "thank you" to all cyclists! Until next time! ...

Love & Bike Tour: Second stage

Here's the second page of the diary of Love & Changing Diabetes Bike Tour!

near Rome, 07/09/2008

The second day of cycling began with a beautiful hill a few miles to the beautiful old town of Narni. Our team of cyclists with diabetes then cycled along the stretch of hilly route of the Via Flaminia was not a walk. Even now the headwind is not missed, but the weather was kinder than yesterday, because at times the clouds gave us moments of relief from the sweltering heat of these days.

Some non-technical problems prevented us from achieving our goals. In fact, after an improvised dining with sandwiches and fruit while controlling their blood sugar, we stopped near Rome, after about 78km of road. In the evening we will prepare a dinner for the last few miles of our tour. The official arrival is scheduled for the next day, when you arrive in the capital, at the conclusion of the initiative.
