Sunt Diabetes

On March 5, 2009 there was an important ceremony in Rome on diabetes in the Senate in the Senate. In the press room of the Senate held a press conference where, in front of reporters, politicians took the floor, doctors, representatives of associations and companies. Diabetes has been exposed as a major problem to be addressed urgently in the interests of all citizens and the institutions themselves. He spoke mainly about the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, linked to obesity, and worrying more and more present even in young children. Inactivity and poor nutrition are key determinants of the phenomenon in question, which is described by the neologism "Diabesity". In youth we must focus on proper education, the world of education and sports.

A brief intervention Donadello conference in the Senate, next to The Sea and Ketmaier

Just a young man, Simon Donadello, has had the wonderful opportunity to speak briefly of his experience in a positive way with type 1 diabetes, and experience with the 2007 UN International Youth Panel during the first World Diabetes Day recognized by the Resolution on Diabetes.

The conference was presented by the journalist, war reporter and television host Franco Di Mare, very attentive to the problems of diabetes. As for the politicians were present, and the Honourable Senators Antonio Tomassini (XII Commission President of the Senate Health and Hygiene), Ignazio Marino, Paola Binetti, Emanuela Baio, Ferruccio Fazio. To the world of diabetes, professional and business associations were: Adolfo Archangels (Diabetes Italy), Marco Cappato (SIEDP), Francesco Chiarelli (ESPE), Dario Jafusco (SIEDP), Aurora Ketmaier (JDRF Italy), Sergio Leotta ( Pertini Hospital of Rome), Lorenzo Mastromonaco (Novo Nordisk), Gabriele Riccardi (SID), Maurizio Vanelli (University of Parma), Federico Serra (Novo Nordisk).

During the conference there was the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the 'Parliamentary Association for the protection and promotion of the right to prevention, Diabetes and Novo Nordisk Italy, with the hope that this is a starting point for the achievement of concrete benefits for people with diabetes: an important collaboration between Italian politics and the world of diabetes is already taking place through the Changing Diabetes Barometer Project (see www.changingdiabetesbarometeritaly.com ).

Then a group of young people directly affected by diabetes and belonging to the project Youth Panel have been received in Hygiene and Health Commission, where the senator Tomassini has kindly presented the mechanisms of an institution like that which he presides, and was willing to listen Youth Panel of young people: they all are presented in turn as Carmen, a girl of the group spoke of the Italian project. Then Simon Donadello spoke of the Youth International Panel and UN Resolution on diabetes and as far as the themes of personal experience with diabetes, sports, and their expectations towards the institutions of this social problem.

A sightseeing tour of the Senate concluded this beautiful and important day for diabetes. An event that will remain in memory, especially for the boys of the Youth Panel, which could come into direct contact with the world of institutions, and have brought home a lot of dreams and plans for the future of diabetes.
