A Christmas gift for people with diabetes: the Senate motion on diabetes

Palazzo Madama - Senato A few weeks ago all people with diabetes have received a small Christmas present, even though many did not know it yet ... I'm talking about 174 on the motion passed unanimously in the Senate Diabetes December 3, 2009. This document marks an important stage of a journey begun long: just think of the Manifesto of the Rights of Persons with Diabetes signed just last summer by parliamentary association and associations, of which we had already spoken . Now some of the principles of the Manifesto seem to find a first practical application! The motion in fact emphasizes the right of all people with diabetes to access the best possible care as is necessary, and that this should be largely free and homogeneous throughout, Recalling also Article 32 of the Constitution. The document also refers to the problems of complications and the availability of the principals for the measurement of glucose, the popular strips often insufficient.

The Republic safeguards health as a fundamental right of the individual and collective interest, and guarantees free medical care to the needy ...

This motion is a beautiful example of constructive cooperation between the associations, the medical and scientific institutions, government agencies. Even politics has played its part with this motion bi-partisan, for example through the efforts of Senators Ignazio Marino, Emanuela Baio, Anthony Tomassini and minister Ferruccio Fazio ... All this is part of the historic Act 115 of 1987, never fully implemented despite its great importance for diabetes: a step forward, however, that it will follow many more!

In Urbino July 26, 2009 was held the fourth Italian Championship of Cycling Road and Diabetes, Diabetes Changing Trophy 2009. The path was that of the large fund Straducale: more than 123km of bike very challenging. Logo di Ciclismo&Diabete

The Manifesto of the Rights of People with Diabetes

On July 9 was reached another important milestone for diabetes in Italy. In the Senate in Rome was presented the Manifesto of the Rights of People with Diabetes. This is a document signed by Italy and by Diabetes' Association Member of Parliament for the protection and promotion of the right to prevention, which was signed by organizations like JDRF, ANIAD, AGD, and many others, with the support of projects and Changing Diabetes Barometer DAWN. It is important to disseminate and raise awareness of this document possible: by doing so people with diabetes and the associations will be aware of their rights and exercise them more decisively promoting the individual. In the Manifesto are many important aspects of diabetes treated in society: the family, the 'education, prevention, scientific research, the' medical care, the 'self, the' association, diabetes in pregnancy, and the young 'immigration .

The Manifesto of the Rights of People with Diabetes is part of a process of dialogue and exchange between institutions and the world of diabetes that is particularly intensified in recent years, showing a growing interest of policy on these issues. At the international level has been done: just think of the European Parliament Written Declaration on Diabetes capacity bike from Italy to Holland by a group of Diabetes & Cycling in September 2006 (see this article ), or the UN resolution on diabetes in December 2006 ( see here ). But even in Italy in March Manifesto had been anticipated since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by its own Parliamentary Association, whose ceremony was also attended by the youth group of the Youth Panel: here is the article .

There are still many prejudices and problems that surround her diabetes and accurate information to public awareness is important. Associations, institutions, international bodies: they all are taking care of that issue by the UN to national governments. Even companies such as Novo Nordisk (pharmaceutical leader in the production of insulin in the world) are increasingly attentive to the social problem of diabetes, which is spreading increasingly throughout the world, takes on the character of a pandemic.

In this context, in 2007 I myself have participated in several activities in the field of diabetes. Among them there were also several important international events, which involved me as a young man with diabetes, sport and member of the Youth Panel. Here are the main activities in which I took part in the second half of the year 2007:

  • a visit to some sites of Novo Nordisk in the North of Europe, presenting the mechanics to concrete experience of a person with diabetes
  • participation at a conference in Berlin as the DAWN Youth Ambassador and witness of young people with diabetes within the international DAWN study
  • the writing of my article to be published in a book on diabetes and UNICEF sport, created to finance a project for the Children of Congo
  • participation in the World Diabetes Day in New York with the 'International Youth Panel, at the first celebration on the approval of the United Nations Resolution on diabetes at the headquarters of the' United Nations, the Headquarters

The Stage of Diabetes & Cycling in Chieti

The Cycling & Diabetes Association has launched the program in 2009 with the stage which was held in Chieti dedicated to its cyclists with diabetes. Participants were about 20, from across Italy. Also of particular importance was the participation of the professional cycling team Acqua & Sapone: some of its riders were present, including Simone Masciarelli. Grace at the prestigious collaboration that goes on for some time, this year on the shirts of Water & Soap will also post the Changing Diabetes.

There were moments where he treated the theory (held by doctors and Paciotti Wide), but also real cycling workouts. Were the key moments of confrontation, aimed at improving the knowledge of your diabetes, therapy, nutrition: in particular on this last point we were the valuable contributions of Monica Miccio.
