The role of JRDF in scientific research on juvenile diabetes

Scientific research plays a fundamental importance in many fields, and that goes for medicine and diabetes. Defeating this disease that affects 200 million people in the world is strategic for the future of society itself: this number is increasing alarmingly.

Very often feel rushed and exaggerated news with enthusiasm by journalists about the research on diabetes, which create an illusion among people with diabetes and, soon after, discouragement.

But there are also many people who believe in a serious research, and work hard devoting their lives to it. Precisely in this field comes into play JDRF ( www.jdrf.org ), stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The JDRF is an international foundation established in 1974 in New York by a group of diabetic patients and their families in order to raise funds to support scientific research on juvenile diabetes, ie diabetes type 1 insulin-dependent.

Logo della JDRF

The JDRF is present in many countries in the world. With his charity work over time it has collected a total of about one billion euros, only in 2008 funded with 120 million more than 1000 research projects in 22 nations. Concrete results and important for research.

In Italy the JDRF has been present and active for years through a subsidiary, also thanks to the tireless work of its president Ketmaier Aurora. In addition to fundraising, JDRF Italy promotes the project of the Italian youth panel made up of young people with diabetes.

JDRF Italy is always at the forefront of many Italian activities for diabetes, and because of its noble objectives and concrete is an important partner with the institutional, medical, and business associations.

Further information is available:

I believe that every person with diabetes should be deeply grateful and trusting towards institutions such as JDRF, seeking to create a better future for all: THANKS ... So good luck to JDRF, but mainly to scientific research for diabetes!

Four years ago ... My diabetes onset

Today is October 28th, we celebrate St. Simon, my name day. And today, October 28, 2008, is also a special anniversary for me: it's been four years since my debut with diabetes.

In 2004 my blood tests were clear: the blood sugar was very high, I had type 1 diabetes. First came the feelings that flooded my mind in those days: the concerns, surprise, disbelief, incomprehension, anger, fear, confusion. Then the urgent things to do in the office files, the bureaucratic cards, certificates, recipe for pharmacies, and especially the doctors and clinics. And in particular anxiety and sadness of the first day spent in the dark basement of the hospital's diabetes center for adults: 28 October 2004 was, in fact.

I had just turned 17 years, passed up to that time no particular health concerns. Diabetes arrived as a rock, a sort of Copernican revolution that stravolgeva all my habits of life, leaving me bewildered and discouraged, with nostalgia for what I had done the day before, the fear for the future, and the illusion a speedy recovery. It was hard to accept. The tests of blood glucose, insulin injections, frequent blood tests, everything was harder for me, I had the nightmare of the needles. To say nothing of my family, she also hit by this and personally involved with worry.

But something was already changing, the very first weeks. I started to read, to form any respect, to fight against the negative aspects of the "disease", and to think in a different approach: I began to dream. I was not going to suffer with sadness that happened to me, there I was, I had to react. The sport and the bicycle, my passions, my curiosity and stubbornness, a family caring, attentive and close, my sincere belief in God: all this has helped me find the way and the strength to accept and live peacefully this new condition, trying to catch even the positive in everything, never content to stay afloat, but wanting to go further, dealing with life decision.

Today, at age 21, I can not imagine a life without diabetes: everything has become normal and everyday. Diabetes is no longer something alien: it is a part of me, I live exactly as the need to eat, drink, breathe, trying to do my best. I no longer feel no anger or nostalgia, but hope for a better future, without the obsession of cure. My life has certainly changed, but I think that the difficulties are always present. The important thing is to feel good about themselves, trying to live well the new opportunities that are presented to us. Diabetes can make us even stronger. For this I must thank all those who were close to me and still help me.

Four years is not much, if confrontanti with many people close to me who have spent considerable time in more boldly with diabetes. But every story is different, and in these years I've done a lot for diabetes, with commitment and determination, and I hope that these are good things. I have accumulated many positive experiences to share, and communicate to others.

According to many I think that the Holy One who bears the same name as me has brought me luck, and now there is nothing to celebrate. At first I thought so. But now I have a new vision of things, so I do not agree: I had an onset with no complications, even without the need of hospitalization because the diagnosis was fairly early. Also today I feel realized in the things I do, and keep chasing the same dream before. All in all, that October day four years ago, San Simon has protected me, and I must be thankful that I was saved that day.

Love & Bike Tour: The emotions, the testimonies

Il gruppo del tour arriva a Roma

The tour group arrives in Rome

When you participate in certain initiatives, important are the emotions that the person takes home in his heart: all this goes well beyond the event itself. That's why I decided to collect and publish what they wrote and thought about the participants of the Changing Diabetes Love & Bike Tour: some have decided to write a personal thought, reliving the atmosphere of bygone days together. I also added the comments from people that although they can not attend physically were close to home. All are important evidence and intense, full of meaning. Good reading, by Simone.

Maurizio Caselli - cycling tour

As promised I wanted to focus on the Perugia-Rome tour, another great experience for me and for the whole group, although only a few. We got to know each other better and to share moments, opinions and ways of living our state of diabetes in an ever better, because through all the experiences we improve our management. I am part of this wonderful group only this year but I must confess that I can handle me much better because I learned so many things new. Returning to the three days of cycling were certainly very positive and exciting places to go through and for cycling in Rome, though with the traffic problems. The arrival of the Roman Forum and welcome to the Village Square in Venice, I was really excited. I think that our arrival has contributed positively to the event, our message to serve others to address the problem in a natural way as we do ..... Greetings and Thanks to all of the heart.

Mauro Tomassini - cycling tour

I tried again with great pleasure the good feelings of Perugia tour-Torino. I saw great friends, exciting bike was crossing a part of Rome. One of my personal final thought: perhaps she felt the lack of Prof. Hello to you soon.
Mauro.

Simone Donadello - cycling tour

Il gruppo del tour pedala verso Roma

The group ride to Rome

The experience of this bike tour was once again special. Back with the group, even if for a few days, even made me relive the emotions beautiful and unique atmosphere of past adventures together cyclists with diabetes. I saw him with affection of old friends, I met new people, I missed those who could not come, which certainly is Pierpaolo.
For the first time I could share this experience with Cecilia: I sent another sensation, and he followed me and helped me with love and dedication. Basically this was also the spirit of the tour: "Love and Bike" in fact. Getting to the finish line with her on the barrel of my bike was unforgettable.
We left Perugia, we pedaled through the mountains, hills and long roads, arriving in Rome: fatigue, heat, traffic and the difficulties were not lacking, but were overcome with passion and dedication of the group. In the capital to another kind of experience I have very fond: the fantastic Changing Diabetes Bus Village of Novo Nordisk, the DAWN Youth Ara Pacis, the knowledge of important personalities in the field of diabetes. Events framed in the context of art beyond compare. Unfortunately I could not take part in the mini-marathon and walk 5 km of running, but I followed and remembered the many people I know who participated.
I'm sure that soon there will be other similar occasions, for us all together again, with our shared goals: we have a responsibility to bring the same important message, that of a lifestyle and a way to think positive even in diabetes, through the bike. Witness the interest and curiosity among the passers also found that we've come across, and often we have stopped asking for information on diabetes: this also means changing diabetes, "Changing Diabetes".
A "thank you" in particular ... ALL! I thank my fellow cyclists and friends, carers, staff, individuals and sponsors who have supported us: everyone has done a great job. I'll take you in my heart. I come home enriched with new emotions, with a greater awareness on my diabetes, with the desire and the decision to get started in dealing with this condition, which I share with many other people like me into the world. Until next time!

Cecilia Hunters - escorted tour

Simone e cecilia al tour

Cecilia Simon and the tour

Travelling is ... beautiful. Preferably in the company. Better still if bike! This tour gave me a chance to experience that most people at my age, not lucky enough to try.
The trip was long, exhausting, especially for cyclists, but also guides for us, exhausted from hours of machine and thoughtful attention towards sports. But it was worth it, and how!
I've met, talked, I compared and I had the opportunity to discuss with people very different from me. I saw beautiful places: Rome at night is an amazing spectacle.
But, above all things, I had the opportunity to spend four days with Simon, my sweet half.
I hope that our journey together, as opposed to this, never ends ...
Cecilia

Emanuela Cianfrocca - organization and support the tour for Novo Nordisk

Dear boys,
I just wanted to tell you that for me to be with you in those days was an unforgettable experience.

What can I say?
At the next adventure!
Yes, because I'm sure there will be others ...
A big kiss to all.
Manu

Pierpaolo De Feo - doctor, cyclist and promoter group

Dear Guys,
you have not been lucky with the scirocco against and temperatures the off-season. Luckily the trip was divided into two Convoys. A pull was tough. Go to big and have fun! Pierpaolo De Feo

Andrea Guerra - cyclist and president of C & D

Andrea

Rizieri Taddei - cyclist

I would have liked to be with you, rather than read. I hope all is well. A hug to all ...... the next.
Rizieri

David and Michela wrote an account of the initiative shown, as I had already written in a previous article . I quote here from two short excerpts of that text.

David Panichi - tandem bicycle tour

I am happy to have shared this experience with the person I am bound by diabetes, which made me feel more motivated to walk the kilometers together on a tandem, but especially has awakened in me a sense of passion and love for themselves and for the person who you have next, a higher awareness of life together, and diabetes in the sport you can always discover a better way of living. David

Michela Sisani - tandem bicycle tour

I'm glad I had this experience because it allowed me to experience new emotions ..., you can better understand the person next door and I feel more united with him, and especially to discover another aspect of Michela ... these three days have left a mark in my life ... but alas ...! Even nell'abbronzatura ...! Michela
