From Urbino emotions Championship for Riders with Diabetes

This year the Championships for Riders with Diabetes is past! Participation in this event, now in its fourth edition in 2009, counts among its ranks many athletes Cycling & Diabetes.

It all started Saturday, July 25 with the stand & diabetes Cycling Association NPO streets in Urbino, set up to provide information on diabetes mellitus and our activities: shoot down the ignorance that is essential to turn around diabetes in society, to create a future without prejudices and better prevention and awareness. In the afternoon there was a meeting between all participants in the Championship Trophy Changing Diabetes: this year we were in 41, almost all regions of Italy, truly a great success, especially if you think that it all started in 2005 by agreement in less than 10 friends! During the meeting were presented the technical details of the race, and information specific to diabetes, but mostly there was the possibility reunited with old friends and learn about the many new arrivals! A nice dinner then finished the evening with the usual attention due to gluten for those who had celiac disease: this year there were three, me, Diego, and Dr. Broad. After dinner there are distributed a bit 'of gadgets and gifts, such as apples offered by Sergio, then we cyclists we wrap made from the arms of Morpheus, enjoying a long night's sleep in anticipation of the race! Too bad that some rooms were a bit 'hard to reach, and that many of us have suffered from the heat and mosquitoes, including me ...

Sunday, July 26 episode was the alarm clock at 6 am or earlier. Immediately after a hearty breakfast to fuel power, each with their own adjustments to therapy and insulin: tricks matured with experience and advice of friends. Then we had our riders with diabetes in the beautiful historic center of Urbino: a really nice big group, all with the same mesh Cycling Diabetes & identify where, as having a positive message. Between us even a tandem: that of David and Michela. It's the time to get into the grid in the middle of 2400 to other bikes, where among the photos is also wasted superstitious rituals to relieve nervousness and tension of departure for the slight delay in the scheduled time. But then, finally, here! Here we go! Even the announcer speaks of us, seeing us go and diabetes!

David Panichi and Michela Sisani tandem on Monte Nero

The pace of the race proves to be immediately supported ... Until you reach the Monte Nero, the protagonist of the large fund Straducale: more than 13 km climb out! Each with his own hand can reach the top and to overcome hills, maybe paying a bit 'of forces to observe the beautiful scenery that surrounded us. Too bad for my recurring and excessive caution in making the descent, because of which I lost many positions. Then I met a few mishap: sometimes cramps, nearly choking when trying to swallow something that I've gone through, the heat of summer makes me suffer so much ... With a lot of effort in each short leg or tear up next turned out to be terrible.

Blood glucose for all cyclists with diabetes has been a key variable in the race: who went into hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia in people ... The most important thing is to convey the message to all people with diabetes that is quite possible, also take part in cycle races harder: we have given the testimony that you just have a good self-control and always travel with glucometer and insulin on hand, so they can better manage. During the race I managed to keep good blood glucose levels, thanks to the adjustments of the insulin pump and continuous glucose sensor: in only part of the race was relatively low blood sugar, which I remedied by integrating with biscuits and sugar. Chronicle of the Italian Cycling and Diabetes 2009

The wheels of cyclists with diabetes are still hot: Sunday, July 26, 2009 was during the 4th Italian Championship Cyclists with diabetes. The event, which is also called the Changing Diabetes Trophy, was held in Urbino in conjunction with the prestigious marathon route Straducale average.

The start of the marathon Straducale of Urbino 2009

In a special historical and artistic context, the departure is taken at 8:20 for the 41 competitors with diabetes Road Cycling Championships, coming from all over Italy. A record attendance of 2009 that, although the number would have been even higher had they not occurred several accidents and mishaps in recent days, a sign that the event is becoming increasingly competitive and consolidated. Our group of Diabetes & Cycling has been pointed out in the midst of all the other bikes, united by the same uniform, but mainly by the desire to be together and to bring the same positive message for diabetes.

The route of the race proved to be very hard. From the start the pace was maintained, and after a few short tears we've reached the formidable Monte Nero: more than 13 kilometers of uphill and climbed down the switchbacks, making a significant selection among cyclists. Arriving finally at the top of a long descent we started it in the second half of the race, characterized by a relatively more peaceful path: however, the fatigue in the legs because it was a lot of climbing just ended, and then also any short slope or hill was still very challenging.

Finally, after so much hard work and after more than 123 km very difficult, yet another long climb uphill, here is the arrival on the cobblestones in the center of Urbino, which he accomplished this great day for diabetes and sport: emotion and happiness for this great undertaking has filled the hearts of us all cyclists at the finish, but also our emotional companions and supporters present. The race was long: almost all we spent more than 4 hours on the bike.

With diabetes against all, cycling and triathlon in two races to May

Simone alla partenza della granfondo di Reggio Emilia

Simon at the start of the race of Reggio Emilia

Diabetes: For many it is a handicap, a limiting factor in everyday life. Imagine in the sport, and even more in athletic competitions. But this is just another of the many prejudices that surround the world of diabetes, with the vision that has distorted the population. Prejudices that do not spare even many of the same people with diabetes, and even many doctors and diabetologists.

I'm prejudiced, of course, ranging debunked. Lately, many have damage done to combat these misconceptions: sport can also contribute to this.

I try to use my passion for the sport, and especially for the bicycle, to try to do something good, useful also for others, supporting the cause of diabetes. In this journey I have met so many other athletes like me with diabetes, such as cyclists Cycling & Diabetes.

That's what drives me to compete, in addition to the passion and desire to have fun: the desire to promote the person with diabetes in society, fighting prejudice and improving my own self through metabolic physical activity.

The group of cyclists to the race of Reggio Emilia

Sunday, May 10 I took part in marathon cycling, "The Two Steps Matilda" in Reggio Emilia, UC Ceresarese registered with the team. For 118km I rode up the sun in the middle of about 1500 other cyclists without diabetes, addressing several challenging climbs with a total climb of about 1000m and across the beautiful landscapes of the castles of the Countess Matilda of Canossa. The time it took was 3 hours and 45 minutes for an average of 31km / h. And bringing all this on top of the Changing Diabetes written, so that everyone could see that diabetes was in their midst and competed with them, touching with his hand the normalcy of people with diabetes. I may have also inspired other cyclists with diabetes to come forward: some unfortunately hide their condition for fear or shame.

Simon at the finish line after running the triathlon of Piacenza

Two weeks of rest and exercise led me to Piacenza on May 24, taking part in the sprint triathlon, with the colors of the CUS Trent. In succession and continuity with the three disciplines were: 750m swim in the Olympic pool, 20km bike and 5km run virtually flat under a scorching midday sun to more than 30 degrees in temperature. All in 1 hour and 8 minutes. Even in this, that seems so extreme and reserved for "super-men", I wanted to continue my challenge with diabetes.

The Stage of Diabetes & Cycling in Chieti

The Cycling & Diabetes Association has launched the program in 2009 with the stage which was held in Chieti dedicated to its cyclists with diabetes. Participants were about 20, from across Italy. Also of particular importance was the participation of the professional cycling team Acqua & Sapone: some of its riders were present, including Simone Masciarelli. Grace at the prestigious collaboration that goes on for some time, this year on the shirts of Water & Soap will also post the Changing Diabetes.

There were moments where he treated the theory (held by doctors and Paciotti Wide), but also real cycling workouts. Were the key moments of confrontation, aimed at improving the knowledge of your diabetes, therapy, nutrition: in particular on this last point we were the valuable contributions of Monica Miccio.
