On 14 November, as every year, we celebrate the GMD: World Diabetes Day and this year the Youth Pannel Italian boys found themselves in Rome to participate actively in events (the year before the appointment was in Perugia ). Upon arrival on November 13, after the space reserved for greetings, started the discussion "at the table" of new developments in diabetes.

The agenda included a discussion on the first GMD and the role of the panelists during the outreach activities planned for the next day. Then we analyzed the "Manifesto of the rights of people with diabetes," a list of points that summarize the needs of all persons with diabetes. Finally, was presented the new project of Novo Nordisk, which aims to help children with diabetes sub-Saharan countries in serious economic difficulties.

In the evening the boys have watched the show "The island that is" by Renato Giordano Tordinola at the theater, a magnificent performance, but dramatic at times almost ironic, that tells the tortuous and difficult road traveled by Dr. Banting and Best looking aide of therapy for diabetes: the 'insulin. A favorite panelist, this first part of the story gave the opportunity to learn about the history of man that enabled them to lead a life serene and uncomplicated.

The next day, stand in Piazza San Lorenzo, the panelists were employed to provide information on diabetes and to interview passersby to detect opinions, doubts and knowledge about diabetes. A real success for the boys, who have been enthusiastic and willing, from nine to eighteen were employed to make people aware of this problem continues to expand, providing useful advice to those who harbored any doubts about it, from 'power to' physical activity.

Exhausted but satisfied with their success, the day when the children are divided into their homes scattered throughout the Boot: Milan, Mantua, Naples, Caserta ... all conscious of having done their best to win the battle against diabetes.

Missing a month at a World Diabetes Day 2009

We have grown. Among exactly one month, November 14, 2009 will be celebrated throughout the world the World Diabetes Day. On this blog we talked about it often: for example, see this previous article .

Manca poco alla Giornata Mondiale del Diabete del 14 novembre 2009

As in past years people with diabetes can be heard loudly, with their testimonies and demands, their problems and hopes. The World Diabetes Day, originally promoted by the IDF, today is a celebration officially recognized by a United Nations resolution, and enjoys the patronage of many local, national and international, with a spread in all countries of the world.

There are many events planned to bring to the fore some important issues: prevention, care and rights of diabetes. Locally, thousands of associations organize gazebo and meeting places in city squares, to disseminate correct information among people and to test their blood glucose by performing screening. With the coordination of local authorities will be illuminated in blue hundreds of monuments, to attract attention thanks to the color of the diabetes, or are organized walks along the city streets with banners and balloons blue. All this will happen also in Italy, for years at the forefront of these activities in favor of diabetes, although some activities may be postponed to Sunday 15 for organizational convenience.

Many events will be proposed to transmit positive values that animate many people with diabetes. For example, on November 15 will be repeated in Perugia pedaling the bicycle tour dedicated to diabetes: Diabetes & Associates Cycling along with many other sympathizers also go through a picturesque route passing through Assisi. Me too I had attended last year (see the ' article ) supporting the importance of exercise in diabetes.

This year I will not be in Perugia, but will attend the World Diabetes Day in Rome, where 13 to 15 November there will be celebrations and activities with the group of the Youth Panel, which brings together young people with diabetes from all over Italy, representing a great opportunity initiatives to coordinate some of the youth. The field of children with diabetes in Spain in Mantua

Hola! We are back from the field of young people with diabetes Mantua! The vacancy of AAGD (as announced in a previous article ) was held at the turn of last August, and after a very intensive week our group of 16 boys came home from Spain, now is the time to tell what happened !

Group photo of children with diabetes to camp in Spain

The departure is taken from Mantua in the night between 15 and 16 August. After a sleepy bus ride to the airport of Bergamo to Valencia, we embarked: for some of us this was the first flight.

Once in Spain, and greeted by a hot sun, we moved to our Hotel Doña Lola in the town of Castellón de la Plana, Valencia, where he prepared for lunch there was an enormous and delicious paella, a traditional dish of the place! Throughout the week there are alternate tourism activities, entertainment and study on diabetes.

The good weather and high temperatures have provided an opportunity to go to the beach all the time that the free time allowed. Most mornings were devoted instead to a Spanish course, with lectures from school Audio Gil Sapnish of the Institute, giving us the opportunity to integrate better with this beautiful language. Just the Spanish school took us to the reception at the town hall in Castellón, where we held a brief ceremony of presentation of the city and brotherhood of nations with their students. The conclusion of the course was celebrated with the awarding of diplomas during a convivial lunch in the forest, the "Pinar".

The evenings were spent visiting the city and waterfront dining in a variety of local dishes: some of us also have the opportunity to enjoy the nightlife and an exciting night on the beach! One afternoon was dedicated to the grueling game of paintball, under a blistering sun and quiet ... More science was the visit to the planetarium.

The tourist aspect was treated mainly by visiting the beautiful medieval towns of Peniscola and Morella, with its beautiful castles. The only downside is the Plaza de Toros Bullfights crowding of Spain, unnecessary and cruel instrument of torture for the bulls ... The last day of stay has been dedicated to the city of Valencia, where he visited the magnificent aquarium Oceanografic, admiring the many fish and other aquatic creatures strange!

But getting back to diabetes. The camp was an opportunity for all us kids to socialize and became a group, but also to confront each other on diabetes, increasing knowledge about their disease through shared experience. In fact you can learn a lot from friends and peers who live in your same situation, and this is the true value of these initiatives. Dr. Francesca Saggiani of diabetes hospital in Mantua has also taken some lessons in-depth diabetes management and self-control, especially as regards the aspect of nutrition.

But diabetes was also center stage on August 20, when our group was hosted by 'local association of young people with diabetes: thanks to the contacts that I have grown in recent months with the energetic president Theresa Mari, we organized a meeting . The evening began with an Italian dinner, and then moved at the headquarters of the association is very well equipped to Castellón: here was held a sort of cultural exchange between Italy and Spain, a moment of encounter and dialogue even among Italian children and Spanish with diabetes. The two associations, the Spanish and Italian, have exposed their activities and characteristics suggerendosi ideas to each other, and we are committed to taking forward a contact for future collaboration: a twinning. This was an important step, because I believe that a comparison across national borders can be born a greater and deeper awareness about diabetes, learning strategies on how to best deal ever!
